a99kitten's Musings

I blog about a WHOLE LOT of stuff :)

Just sold my leftover 1/2 position of TSLA up +10%. I almost sold it last week but liked Elon’s tweet so kept it.

I bought it in February at 39. Pretty sure I top-ticked it. Genius! When it crashed into the 34s I violated the “cut your losses before you bleed” rule because I knew it would go back up. I didn’t know how long it might take, but I knew (of couse assuming the market didn’t completely roll over that is.)

Sold my first half when it came back and I broke even on it. Kept the other half on because one thing I strongly believe is Trust in the Paypal Mafia. I know some of these guys personally and they are smart. I take their smarts over Zuckerburg smart any day of the week. Plus the FB seed money came from the Paypal mafia so there you go :)

I snicker repeatedly when I read people’s snarky comments on StockTwits or Twitter about LNKD or TSLA. Or even YELP. Or FB for that matter. But they don’t know these guys. And live to scalp $0.10 on trades.

I was **very** dumb in that I didn’t buy LNKD for my 401k last year instead of just trade in and out of it. But oh well. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Not sure TSLA performs like that but who knows. Maybe I should sock some away in my 401k. It’s a technology company. Not an auto company. But I sold it out of my trading account this morning because a) it’s for trading and not keeping and b) pigs get slaughtered.

I like the first day of the quarter so far. No joke :)

Also…Elon looks like John Barrowman (Torchwood, Arrow) who I thought looked like Tom Cruise when I saw him at SDCC. Yet Elon looks nothing like Tom Cruise so…….weird! (it’s their chins!)

End of the quarter….how the heck are we 1/4 of the way through 2013 already???

I just did a quick calculation and for Q1 2013 I am up +14% in my trading account. I say not too shabby at all. Now keep in mind my trading account is small as I consider it more of my “gambling” account. Not like I’m making 14% off of a $100mm account. That would be cool though :) It’s also been during a crazy bull market run so who knows where that goes. Although I am more concerned about my conservative buy and hold 401k in that scenario.

My biggest win for the quarter was my decision to buy LNKD before earnings. Second biggest win was buying some NFLX options as it was on its first tear after it reported earnings. I *wish* I bought them before earnings!! Also did very well with RIMM (pre BBRY), RDN, UA, DNKN and FB.

Biggest loser *by far* was CALL. But I’ve learned my lesson there. Other losers were MOS, CRUS and WFM (lesson to NOT play ER.)

Besides my few gut calls or lucky ER plays, I am still basically following trades in the 12631 trading room made by chessNwine and a few by RaginCajun. I have way, way more winners than losers by doing this. As I said at the end of 2012, I will keep this successful action up.

I still have been a giant pile of fail in learning more about technical trading. Really is voodoo to me :) But I am pretty good at listening to my gut. And finding smart people to follow who practice this form of voodoo :) The trading room at iBC is full of them.

April 15th is my 1-year anniversary of leaving my “regular” job to work from home part-time while spending more time trading (best decision EVER.) I forget my actual 1 year anniversary date with iBC and 12631 but it’s right around the 15th. But you can be sure I will be renewing.

One year ago today I lost one of my best friends.

It still makes me incredibly sad but at least I can look at his pictures or talk about him with a smile as I remember how much happiness he brought to my life. But today is a little rough. Or rrrruufffff as he would have said…

Angelus on deck

Angelus snow head

I miss you Angelus.

Much has been made by Yahoo’s decision to pull the plug on remote employees last week. I was surprised by the decision since a lot of Bay Area companies have been allowing this for awhile now and it’s been gaining traction as a good way to attract employees. But I also understand why a company would make that decision.

I read a LOT of con articles, a few Pro and listening to pro and con on CNBC. I honestly wanted to smack a lot of the writers of the con articles, especially when they morphed into saying Yahoo was against women and mothers. And draconian. Give me a break.

I work from home. But I work for my own company so I get to make those rules. And if I don’t get my work done, I can fire myself with very little fanfare, threat of lawsuits or fear of taking to the internet with my gripes….against myself.

But I didn’t always work for myself (well…was still partially my company but totally different.) I was HR. And did receive requests for work from home policies. And we said no repeatedly for years. Not one single executive actually wanted it. Some said it would make some employees happy and they would live with it if the company established a policy, but none really wanted it. There are a lot of reasons for that. And some of those are the exact reasons Yahoo laid out as to why they were stopping their remote policy.

I get that, especially in the bay area, you can spend a fair amount of time on the road because you live far away due to housing costs or choosing to live away from the hectic business areas, near better schools, etc. Plus traffic is hellish. But that’s the way the bay area has been for years and years so it’s no surprise to anyone.

And I also get that, as a parent you want to spend more time at home with your kids. But that’s the exact reason I don’t think you are working as much as you should be if not in the office.

Face it – not every job can be done as well remotely. And really face it – not every employee can be trusted to work as efficiently when not in a work/office environment. And there are a lot of administrative reasons to not want employees working away from home – confidential/proprietary information worries, workers comp and labor law BS, etc. I was 100% against it as HR. Most of those things are never thought of by the complaining employees. Or reporters.

And frankly, the employees that we eventually allowed to work from home didn’t seem as part of the team. This includes me! When I changed my schedule to work from home part-time (before transitioning out completely), I noticed how I felt less like part of the team. And I didn’t have a department to miss – I simply reported to the CEO.

It all of a sudden becomes harder to get those employees to Team Events (even a dang holiday party for fun!), to team building things, company meetings, team lunches, department meetings, etc.

I know at least some of these employees at Yahoo took the job after being told they could work remotely. And yes that does stink. But company policies can change. And you have the option to change with them or not. But to cry and complain that you have to GO to work in order to keep your job is a bit ridiculous.

It’s not the job of a company or a CEO to make all decisions to make life easiest for the employees. It’s the goal of the company to create excellent products that keep customers happy and make money for their investors and shareholders (some of which are probably employees via options and stock plans!) And make money for the company. And a lot of this money is then spent on salaries, bonuses, benefits, perks, etc FOR the employees.

It is a job. You are employed. And if the company thinks they can get more and better work product out of their staff by having them work together and not apart, then that’s what the company should do. And you can feel free to quit and work elsewhere. I can pretty much guarantee that your job will be filled pretty quickly.

It’s Oscar night!! Not sure what that has to do with eating (absolutely nothing, zilch, zero, nada) but I decided to make this since the chicken has been in my freezer for a couple weeks :) Call me glamour-puss! I found this recipe in a magazine and then changed it to suit my tastes…

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
About 1 lb of skin-on chicken drumsticks
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
12 cloves garlic (about 1 head)
2 lemons (finely grated zest of one, juice of both)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 pound frozen corn, thawed
3/4 cup whole milk

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Heat the olive oil in a large nonstick ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle the chicken with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper, and 2 tablespoons flour. Add to the skillet and cook, turning, until slightly golden on all sides, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, lemon zest and lemon juice and turn the chicken to coat. Transfer the skillet to the oven; roast until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through, about 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the corn and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper; cook, stirring occasionally, until the corn softens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon flour, then add the milk and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer, stirring, until thickened, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

I am pairing it with some Moet & Chandon Imperial as Moet seems to be the Hollywood bubbly of choice and this was already chilled in my fridge :)

I love watching the Oscars. Even though I love to make fun of celebrities too. Mostly because I think actors taking themselves SOOOOO seriously is rather amusing…but LOVE the outfits :)

I have been hosting a Superbowl party for about 10+ years? I used to go to parties but then noticed that I had less and less football loving friends. What. The. Heck?

I love being a hostess even though I fly around like a crazed bird the day of getting ready. And this morning is no different…

So…what is the deal with a helium shortage?? I LOVE balloons!! Someone better get on that. Hello Mr. President? You have to chime in on a host of things you really have no business being involved in (plus pretty sure there are things you SHOULD be focusing on…but I digress…) so get on THIS!!

Anyway, I scored the LAST of the red and gold balloons at my local store. And the last of their helium. The lady said she would add Hi-Float to them to get them to stay up longer but if I didn’t take them yesterday, the helium and probably the balloons would be gone. OK. Well…this morning they are pretty much all dead :( My 49ers balloons are fine but about 20 of the red and all 24 of the gold are floating…on the floor. :( :(

Called around to all the other stores on the coast first thing this AM – no helium. At all. What the F^($@(#$&(@#$. Oh well. I’ll get creative with the red and gold that I have.

Was hoping I’d get some love from all-powerful Balloon God but no such luck. Well..he (or she) better be giving all of their God-like karma and energy to the 49ers to win today. Then it’s OK :)

Then..apparently my washing machine is leaking a little. I think it’s just a little anyway. Small puddle in laundry room after I did a load of towels last night. So I’m trying another small load this AM to see. Fingers crossed. I need the washing machine to wash Storm’s beds and towels. He is having a little incontinence issue while he sleeps. Just a little but enough to where you need to wash everything. It started yesterday. So I am very stressed although supposedly it’s not uncommon in older dogs. But this makes a husky mom very stressed. At least we have hard wood and stone floors everywhere so it’s just towels and doggie beds to wash. Storm just said “thanks for sharing that with people mom..”

Pre-heating the oven now to start the mac and cheese which I will then move to the slow cooker to keep warm for the game.

Then I need to make the sour cream and onion dip because ALL football parties requires sour cream and onion dip with Ruffles. Also, need to go buy more Ruffles as a 1/2 bag went mysteriously missing last night….damn gnomes.

Need to get ice so I can chill the bottles of bubbly and sodas. Water is in the fridge. And milk. I’ll put on coffee for you and I think I even have some tea laying around. But if people want beer then it’s BYOB. I don’t drink beer so there is no sense is trying to have me pick any out.

Then I have to prepare the shrimp and sausage for the jambalaya. I’ll make close to game time and let simmer on super low for half time enjoyment. I’ve never made jambalaya so let’s see how this goes. But it seemed right since the game is in NO :)

A friend is picking up my boneless Buffalo wings because you can’t make those at home. And I don’t like bones. And frankly, Chili’s has some of the best boneless wings EVER. And I haven’t had them in 3 years or longer. So I ordered 2 party trays of those!!! YUMYUMYUM. Apparently boneless wings are made from leftover breast meat (and not the butt meat that Bud(?) commercial told us they were years ago!)

And then right before kick-off I will add some browned pine nuts, sesame seeds and red pepper to my poke which has been marinating in the fridge all night. I was trying to think of a San Francisco food and all I could come up with was Rice A Roni (which I LOVE) but seemed silly since I had jambalaya already! So I thought fresh fish (even though a Hawaiian dish) would have to work.

Oh well..I’ll drink NorCal sparkling from Chandon or Ferrar :) (but a bottle of Dom is chilling in case we win!)

I’ve put out my Niners blanket. Moved my Montana signed football down to the living room. Bought all 49ers, red and gold tableware. Have my Niners gnome out and ready to cheer since he always went to all of the games with me :)

This is a big deal. I’ve read a lot of whining (in comments sections for news stories made by fans of LOSING teams) how this SuperBowl is soooo boring. Whatever. The 49ers are one of the premiere teams in the league who lost their mojo but came back strong last year and again this year. Get over it. I still have parties and enjoy the game when my team isn’t in it. If you are whining, then you are not really a football fan are you? Plus the Harbowl adds some fun story to it. And Ray Lewis…well…I don’t necessarily like or dislike the guy but come on dude….you do play on a TEAM. Oh well…

GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (turning on NFL Channel for ALL DAY coverage right now!)

Received a phone call around 1pm from the town electric/water company that my usage shot up over night and has stayed up all morning. I’ve been in the bay area this week so away from my house. The guy at the water company said there has been a lot of burst pipes today due to the intense cold for the past couple weeks and then it finally warmed up to above freezing (in the afternoon) for the first time yesterday. Great…

Got a hold of a General Contractor that has done some work on the house and asked if he could drive over sometime today and check it out. He said no problem, he’d go right now since if a burst pipe inside it would be very bad.

20 minutes later he called back saying yes, a pipe had burst but in the garage (it’s for the outside spigot.) He turned it off at the source. Said the garage floor was wet along with some of the stuff (toolbox, cabinet, snow blower, few empty boxes) in the garage but most of the water had run outside. There was some dry wall damage by the area of burst but nothing major.

He offered some of his crew to come over after their job today to get the damaged dry wall out of there so the interior wall could dry out. He’d call one of his plumber contacts to get out there tomorrow to replace the pipe and then he’d get his crew to replace the drywall.

So thanks to the water company for noticing this and alerting me to it and a local GC who takes care of his customers (past and present!), no major damage and it will be fixed quickly.

I can assure you this would NOT have happened so quickly or seamlessly in the Bay Area. Pretty sure the water company here could care less about your usage unless you don’t pay for it. And good luck finding a GC who would go out of his way to check for you and then react that quickly unless he was actively working on your house, and that’s even questionable.

Score yet another giant point for small town living in my mind.

So let’s see, how many news organizations/journalists touched this story without apparently checking any facts? And yet the facts were clearly there to be dug up.

Sports Illustrated
ESPN
South Bend Tribune
Fox Sports
New York Times
NY Post
CBS
Associated Press
Los Angeles Times

I’m pretty sure all of the above (except maybe the South Bend Tribune?) have WAY more resources than Deadspin. But there are almost no real reporters nowadays. There are just a bunch of jerks who sit around trying to beat the rest to the fastest tweet or FB update or the blingiest link bait. It’s entertainment now, not news. Have you looked at what passes as news stories nowadays? Too much time/space to fill up and eyeballs to try and catch. Who has time for silly things like fact checking or investigating what you are putting out there as fact.

There was tons of false data during “Superstorm” Sandy. Tons and tons during the Sandy Hook shooting. And those are just 2 recent examples. I’m sure there are plenty more on a regular, daily basis that doesn’t make such a splash.

I’ve never even heard of this guy and, frankly, don’t really care since besides making himself look foolish, I don’t know what real harm came from it. But I love when reporters are shown to be idiots I believe most are.

I have no idea if the above represents all of the “news” agencies who wrote about this. I simply read the Deadspin article and copied down the news agencies. But I’m not a reporter. And have never claimed to be. So I have an excuse to limit my fact checking to simply reading someone else’s report.

All I’ve heard out of Obama/Washington is raise taxes, pay your fair share, the rich need to pay MOAR!!! But this post is not about that as that gets my BLOOD BOILING (look at my tax bill – I pay a LOT!)

No, this is about the attention NOW being given to the 2% FICA (that’s your Social Security) payroll tax “holiday” that was allowed to expire along with the other tax hikes on those “rich people”. This 2% change effected every single person who collects a pay check. So everyone had a tax hike. I won’t get into the lies Obama told about not taxing the poor and middle class blah blah blah. ALL politicians lie so it’s not like this is something original.

What I will say about it is GOOD. That 2% should be paid by everyone. These same everyones that plan on collecting social security, should have to pay for it. The company match didn’t go down at all. Companies still had to contribute the full 6% of gross payroll for YOUR social security. But you didn’t – YAY. Wait…what?

When the 2% tax “holiday” went into effect, I sent an email out to all employees at our company letting them know and pointing out that it was a good time to start contributing to a 401k or increase their contribution with this additional 2% in their pockets before they got comfortable with spending it and it was absorbed into their daily spending mindset. Time to start saving for their own retirement and not depend on social security which is a joke.

You know how many people did that? 0. Zero. Nada. Now, a few people already contributed the max for the year so they couldn’t do anything. But the rest? Well, apparently they are independently wealthy and don’t need to think about a retirement savings….

I know that not everyone can contribute the max per year. And that people have kids and budgets and emergencies come up yada yada. BUT – savings should BE part of your budget. What will you live on??? And I know what everyone made at work so not one person can cry poor to me. These weren’t minimum wage workers at a fast food chain supporting a family of 6. You can afford even a small savings budget. It adds up over time.

And when I see people walking around with the newest iGadgets, designer shoes & bags, new cars, vacations, going out all the time – but with NO savings? You are part of the problem. Did your parents or other guardian not teach you anything? Failed basic math? Planning on dying young?

So any cries about your first check of 2013 being smaller because of the tax “hike”…no. I reject this as whining. Not a tax hike anyway. Simply went back to the same rate as it was 2 years ago (after all, the Dems keep saying that about the tax brackets going back to Clinton era ranges…) It’s enforced savings. Do I think SS is a good plan. No. But that’s a whole other blog/rant.

Now, if you are in your 20s-50s right now, will you be able to collect any of that Social Security when you retire? I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you. Start saving ON YOUR OWN. Because if even if you can collect some SS, it will NOT be enough to live on.

The government should not be responsible for you. The rich are not responsible for you. I am not responsible for you. You, and only, are responsible for you. Start acting that way.

This story annoys me SO much.

http://halfmoonbay.patch.com/articles/local-restaurant-refuses-to-serve-alcohol-to-nursing-mother

I have gotten pretty perturbed over the “power” of bad reviews on review sites. I went to leave a review of a local store and saw they have 1 review. And it was bad. But upon reading the review it became clear it was for the wrong store. If you are going to make the effort to login into your Yelp account and search for a store and leave a bad review because you are pissy, be sure it’s for the RIGHT place.

Too many times I have seen 1 or 2 star reviews for places but then you read the actual review and it’s either for something stupid such as “loved our food and service but my water didn’t have enough ice and this bothered me.” (I wanted to punch this reviewer.) Or my favorite was for Storm’s oncologist – this place is top-notch and the doctors are great. But a person left a review saying nothing about the doctors or clinic but complaining about the lack of parking. GAH!

If I’m searching Yelp for a good restaurant on the coast, am I going to see less stars and pass it over or read the actual reviews and see that they don’t serve alcohol to nursing mothers and think “ohmygosh – how could I go there?! They are violating everyone’s rights?!?!” Only if I was a nursing mother looking to drink I suppose. But I am sure some people will get worked up and freaked out and angry because that’s what people do, especially in the Bay Area where it’s evident that everyone is out to violate your rights and you need to get angry and do something about it because you clearly have Nothing. Better. To. Do. Miramar is a long standing tourist place and locals love it too so I can’t imagine it will effect them (aside from the drunkard moms), but it still bugs me.

I have no idea if the occasional drink effects your breast milk. But let’s face it – you know that in society, you will be judged. I cannot count the times I’ve been to Napa and see parents getting loaded. With their kids in tow. Why in the world are you bringing your kids on a wine tour? Because you suck as parents, that’s why. And I will judge you. Guess what? When you make the decision to become a parent, you don’t get to do certain things. Or it becomes much harder and involves more planning. Deal with it or don’t breed.

I think the bigger issue with the moms in this story is that you probably haven’t been drinking much being pregnant/a new mom (at least I hope not) and that 1 glass of bubbly might just effect you enough on that drive home. Do you really need to do that? Especially with your baby with you? Have your friend over for lunch at your house and enjoy it there if you need it.

So give me a break. They don’t want to serve you (which is their right) so you move on. Who cares. People need more to do in their lives if this makes them cry or “ruins their day”.

And I love this restaurant and will continue to go there.
