I blog about a WHOLE LOT of stuff :)

So my friend got online at 6:30. I met her at 7am. And we are about 2000 back but Ballroom 20 holds about 4200 so we are good to get in. So now we are sitting here on our little chairs we “won” at the Ringer panel. Genius swag.

I think the bulk of these hardcore people are for Torchwood – which I don’t care about. Then it’s The Walking Dead and finally Big Bang Theory which is the reason I am here waiting!! The Bones panel was cancelled :(

I’ve had my picture taken already. Chewie and my wolf ears are popular :)

We saw a pair of what I think were furries. Creepy.

Another woman wearing high heels. Serious stupid. I’m all for being cute but heels are so dumb here. Like watching the LA douche couple get in line for Hall H yesterday – guy in his Ed Hardy finest and girl in a silk sheath dress with 5″ heels…sinking in the grass. Those are the real dorks here.

Oh – we are moving! Gotta go!

I saw X-Men: First Class last weekend. GO SEE IT! I loved it!!! Now, I am a lover of the X-Men comics. But they did a really great job with this movie so even people who know nothing of the X-Men can enjoy it.

They concentrated on the story and acting much more than most comic book movies. Obviously there were a lot of special effects but I never felt that they were the center piece of the movie. They were merely part of it like any other actor.

The Hellfire Club storyline is my 2nd favorite after the Dark Phoenix saga so I was very wary of them doing it well. They didn’t really fully flesh out the Hellfire Club as it is done in the comics. I can only hope they take it further if they do a sequel and not just jump into another storyline – that would be cooler I think. I was also very suspicious of Kevin Bacon being cast as Sebastian Shaw. I like Kevin Bacon. But this character is a certain way and his physical attributes kinda help make him. And Kevin Bacon doesn’t have those. But he was GREAT.

All of the casting was fantastic. James MacAvoy was a great young Charles Xavier. Hilarious that they showed him being a bit of playboy in college :) Michael Fassbender, who plays Eric (Magneto) was, in my opinion, perfect. He plays the dark, handsome, super strong man who has his demons. Also = hot :) If Daniel Craig ever wants to stop playing James Bond, the producers needs to look no further than this guy.

All the younger mutants (the “First Class” were good. They do veer from, or “re-imagine”, the X-universe. But that’s OK. They did it really well much like the new Star Trek movie did. There a couple surprise cameos in the movie which are fun. Yes, I do think they could have found a much better White Queen than January Jones but she looked the part and didn’t have to emote too much. Although if they did expand on the Hellfire Club storyline and needed the White Queen to do more – they might consider replacing her. Or getting her acting lessons.

The bulk of the movie is set in the early 60s which is a gorgeous time period for costumes. Mad Men (and James Bond before it) shows us how cool they are dressed back then! They set this around the drama with Cuba, Russia and JFK. It works as a good backdrop and a useful story.

I highly recommend the movie!

Also…Michael Fassbender = HOT :)

Guy in turtleneck = yum :)

Penny-pinching poultry keeps majority of his fortune in gold coins stored in massive “money bin” high in the hills above Duckburg; also invests in pearls, gems, other “hoardables.” Still refers to August 15th, 1971 –the day President Nixon took the U.S. off the gold standard– as “Black Sunday.” Habitually marks anniversary by calculating net worth as percentage of the value of the gold in Fort Knox (21.4%). Famously frugal: Once fought a bear over a $2 jar of honey, never gives to charity, still has the first dime he ever earned. I saw some pictures of the new, new Wonder Woman costume. It appears the studio/show took notice of the complete hate on the internet for the new costume/look that was “leaked” a couple weeks ago.

New pics here:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1371465/First-look-Adrianne-Palicki-action-Wonder-Woman-filming-gets-underway.html

But their changes simply changed the reason to hate it. So they took away the shiny pleathery-looking tights/pants and replaced them with cloth. Now they appear to wrinkle – excellent. Pretty sure every single reader of super hero comics can confirm – the costumes don’t wrinkle!! Ever!!!

They changed her boots back to red from the blue they originally had her in. But they look like weird elf-toe boots that sag. With no heels. I get that it would be impossible for WW to run around in the heels she had – but this is fantasy and she is a super hero. The flat boots only serve to make the actress’ feet look big and the boot to appear slumpy. Again – super hero costumes are made of magic material that does NOT sag, slump or wrinkle!

Her costume top looks like it is sagging down. And still shiny and pleathery. And impossibly (since we saw the push-up action in the earlier stills) her boobs looks saggy and small.

Now, these were action and candid shots so I get it’s not the same as the posed look but eww. Double and triple eww actually.

The actress isn’t right for the part. Hair, make-up everything. Let’s face it – no actress would be perfect as we (WW fans) use the comics as the all-around model and Lynda Carter as the “real-life” incarnation. No offense to Adrianne Palicki who was great on Friday Night Lights, and is a very pretty girl, but she is not right for this role. No actress is.

How she is supposed to look

Don’t get me wrong, I will watch the show. All 3-4 episodes of it before it gets canceled. Just like I watched “Birds of Prey” when they aired it. And this show and costume has made me like the new version of her costume in the comics more which I totally hated but at least is better than the junk made for the new show.

Maybe they just need to keep the female superheroes animated? The only female comic character that has been well done in recent years (post Lynda Carter’s WW) is Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. And that was 1992. I am not a fan of Anne Hathaway attempting this character but we will see. Maybe she can pull it off? She is nowhere near as hot and sexy as Michelle Pfeiffer but maybe she at least won’t wreck Selina/Catwoman like Halle Berry did (who also completely wrecked Storm/Ororo in the X-Men movies. Ugh.)

Anyway, I am bummed they are apparently wrecking Wonder Woman. Might it be good and a pleasant surprise? Sure. I suppose. But I am not holding my breath. I did however just buy this which is waaaaay cuter than the stupid new costume :)

WW Cami set

Grown-up Underoos! :)

Have $41 in “eBay bucks” from prior purchases…

Have a Paypal balance due to Bing cashback rewards coming back to me…

Wanted this and found it on eBay for less than retail with free shipping:

Yay for shopping wisely in the past and having rewards in places to use them to buy a cool thing at $0 actual out of pocket cost to me :)

Saw this in real life at Comic Con – a very cool statue. I try to stick to only Star Wars (and some Indy) collectibles but every once in a while….

Just read that Kevin Bacon has been cast as Sebastian Shaw in X-Men: First Class. Hmmm. I like Kevin Bacon but I’m not sure I see this *AT ALL*. But we’ll see I guess.

January Jones (aka Mrs. Don Draper) has been cast as Emma Frost “The White Queen”. Again…hmmm. Looks-wise she works-ish but I’m not sure she can portray that character. Especially since this is Emma Frost from the Hellfire Club, and not the more recent comics.

The Hellfire Club story arc with The Black Queen/Jean Grey is one of my most favorite stories ever. It led right into The Dark Phoenix saga which is one of the best **ever** written in comics. But The Hellfire Club arc was so, so, so good and you needed it to get to Dark Phoenix! So please do not wreck it guys! I’m sure this movie won’t touch that storyline but you know it’s only time…

I like James McAvoy. And I can see him playing a young Professor X. But how does that work with the Hellfire Club? I guess they are “re-imagining” the X-Men history in this though? I guess this is an easy/tempting thing to do since these characters are so well known and loved so you just run with it. But don’t change history too much (not that the first X-Men movies haven’t already done this already) is all I ask.

Of course I will see the movie. I just hope they do a good job. And not all cast-happy with actors that won’t work for the already very fleshed-out characters we have grown to love.

Anyway, here is the story at Ain’t It Cool News.

Now I need to go get down my X-Men comics and reread this arc…and then maybe the Dark Phoenix saga…

Just finished reading this. Wow. A very, very good story. I take back my long-held opinion that Marvel is dark and DC puts out the goody-goody comics…this was a dark, and sad story. And it shows that the DC Universe heroes aren’t all goody two-shoes. Definitely more greater good marvel-style in this story. Makes me want to hunt down the comics that came after this story arc.

Yes, Superman and Wonder Woman will always be “perfect”. Holding up the ideals of truly perfect heroes who will do no wrong, even for the right reasons. But neither is really human so that’s allowed :) But it seems there is a little more Bat in the human members of the JLA and DC universe than I knew…

This (the graphic novel) was published in 2005 (original comic series in 2004.) I’m way late to the table and desperately trying to catch up after a many years lapse in my comic reading. But if you haven’t read this story arc – I recommend it.

Issues:
X-Men: Curse of the Mutants #1
X-Women (Marvel One Shot)
X-Men: The Heroic Age #526
Wonder Woman #601 (first official issue after her costume/history change. FYI – this situation was NOT popular at Comic Con which seems, to me anyway, to be a good sampling of the CORE fan base)
Batgirl #12

Graphic Novels:
Teen Titans/Outsiders (LOVED both of these titles back when…)
Titans: Old Friends
Angel!!!!!! The story picked up RIGHT after the series ended…whee!

Oh yeah – “Kick Ass” arrived from Amazon…

Yikes – I better get reading…I have so, so much to digest – books, comics, graphic novels, Fantasy Football info, Vanity Fair and Vogue issues, old TV shows, new TV shows, movies….I work and exercise too much… oh, and hang out with the buds! (NO SUCH THING as hanging out with them too much!! I say give up work!)

Just finished reading the DC Comics’ graphic novel “Trinity”. It’s a story of Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman as they first meet and fight together to battle Ra’s al Ghul and Bizarro. The novel is from 2004 but I just got it in my comic book/graphic novel birthday haul earlier this month :)

Trinity

I liked it. A version of them meeting for the first time I had never read before. Superman likes Wonder Woman, Batman is a paranoid kinda-sorta jerk (but really isn’t that his charm?) and Wonder Woman thinks these men are brave but cuckoo (ok, it doesn’t actually use that term but you get that feeling;) )

It also has a young “rogue” Amazon named Artemis. They barely touch on where she came from/why rogue but what it did offer didn’t jive with my remembrance of the Amazon and Paradise Island (sorry now called Themyscira that simply IS paradise, not called Paradise) lore. I’ve been out of the WW loop for too long apparently!

On to my next graphic novel in the stack. Do I stay in the Wonder Woman vein or move over to some X-Men?? THAT is the question! :)

I just ordered “Red” – mostly because a) Warren Ellis cracked me up at the SDCC panel and the movie looks fun (even though I don’t think it follows the comic much – it has Helen Mirren so it HAS to be good!)

I also ordered (graphic novel) Grimm’s Fairy Tales Volume 1 (although I think I should order Volume 2 ASAP as well) so I need to get through this current stack! I was talking to people in line at SDCC about the Grimm’s Fairy Tales in gand the definite consensus was that these were great re-tellings in graphic format. Although if that lying beyotch Red does anything to the wolf….(is that a Grimm tale?)

Plus I think I’m heading back to Lee’s on Friday so that can’t end well for my wallet….
